Roman Holiday

Roman Holiday

As the Audrey Hepburn fan I am, when I heard we were to visit Rome this summer I figured I had to tie it to one of my favorite movies, Roman Holiday, by using it as a touristic guide through the European capital.

The Colosseum

I’ve heard a lot about the Colosseum throughout the years and seen a lot of pictures, but like in many other cases, pictures and descriptions don’t do justice to the architecture of the monument.

We went to see the Colosseum one day at sunrise and stayed to watch the gradients of the sun setting on the other side of the amphitheater.

The Spanish Steps

First attempt for the Spanish Steps happened on a Wednesday afternoon at 5pm, which I quickly found out wasn’t the greatest idea as it was full of people. However, he atmosphere was great, seeing both tourists trying to take photos of the monument, as well as locals stopping to meet up with old friends after a day’s work, everything perfectly fitted together like in a painting.

Still, I wanted go and see the steps when there wouldn’t be people everywhere, so we ended up coming back two days later at 8 in the morning and found the place empty, the morning sunshine subtly reflecting on the stone. It was the perfect contrast to the evening landscape described earlier.

Via Margutta 51

We got to see Via Margutta on our last day in Rome, just hours before leaving for the airport.

The morning of our departure I realized the apartment we had rented for the week was pretty close to the historic street and immediately decided I had to see it before leaving. I didn’t get to stroll down the street for as long as I would have wanted but, of course, I stopped to see the famous “Via Margutta 51”, which was just as beautiful and peaceful as in the movie, not at all full of tourists like the other attractions in the city.

We stumbled across Piazza della Rotunda and the Pantheon at sunrise, just as the night air was clearing the atmosphere. The Pantheon was already closed so we didn’t get to see the inside (maybe next time), but the square was still pretty busy, full of people trying to get a table at one of the restaurants nearby.

Fontana di Trevi

We also saw Fontana di Trevi one morning and got to take a few shots just before starting the day.

I’m curious to hear your recommendations for when visiting Rome, you can let me know in the comments or on Instagram.

Until next time…
