As most of you, I’ve been searching for more forms of entertainment since quarantine started, so today I’ll share some of the podcasts and books that have been keeping me occupied lately.
Making it in Manhattan by Caroline Vazzana
If you’re interested in working in the fashion industry, this book is for you.
I loved Caroline’s approach at combining resources and giving advice through stories from when she first started, it all gave the book a friendly feel, as opposed to other books that take more of a strict, informational approach, I liked to see that this one was a bit more fun to read 🙂
The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier
I think it was around the time the third book came out, one of my best friends was reading them in German and kept recommending them to me, but as a non-German speaker (believe me, I tried, I had to wait for the English version. And then I got distracted with other things… for about 6 years. But finally, we were talking a few weeks ago and remembered the series.
The story revolves around Gwendolyn/Gwyneth Shepherd (translations of her name vary… still not sure why) and her family’s time traveling gene, transmitted through generations of women. Her cousin Charlotte is supposed to be the gene-carrier of her generation, but it turns out there’s a bit of a mix up involving family secrets, and Gwendolyn turns out to have it and is now forced to learn about what seems like an entire new world.
Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and the Marriage of the Century by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger
By this time, everyone reading this blog portably knows how much I enjoy occasionally reading biographies, but this time, I decided to switch it up a bit and started listening to it in an audiobook form.
I started the book during the summer, while in Italy at a fashion course and it instantly became my ‘drawing audiobook’. I have always been a multitasker and most of the time I need to have something playing in the background no matter if I’m working, cooking or drawing, which is how I got into audiobooks. After endless hours of listening to “Furious Love” while drawing or brainstorming, I started associating it with the action, so now I mostly play it when I’m working on something fashion related.
I’m a few chapters from finishing it, and the book itself is well written, with in-depth details, but not boring in any way.
The Business of Fashion Podcast
I’ve had the BOF podcast saved for a while, but didn’t get to listen to it until recently, so now I play different episodes whenever I’m in the mood to learn something or in need of inspiration. I definitely recommend it if you’re interested in the fashion industry, both the business side and the people behind it.
SimplyPodLogical
My new go-to podcast for whenever I want to relax & laugh.
PS: If you’re looking for movies & tv shows to binge, you can find my most recent recommendations here.
Let me know if you have read any of the books or listened to the podcasts mentioned, as well as any other recommendations you have via Instagram or in the post comments.
Until next time…
